Located on a corner hillside block in Beaconsfield, a double studio for 2 local artists has made the most of a beautiful backyard and views across to the ocean. Within the two storey volume are a ground floor and upper floor studio of different characteristics to suit each artist.

A large, angled glazed window faces south to let in consistent ambient light into each studio. Whilst the ground floor studio ‘bunkers’ down into the ground and has a large opening connecting it to the garden, the upper studio has windows that make the most of the views.

It was critical that the light was controlled so western and eastern openings are carefully located and sized accordingly. Cross ventilation is achieved by allowing the reliable southern sea breeze through the spaces & using natural rise of the yard so that existing mature trees provide cool summer shade.
