railway road studios
Located in Subiaco, these two studios were designed for an artist couple who live in a house at the front of the block with their elderly parent living in a small apartment at the rear of the site. In between these buildings was a garden in which they wanted to place their studios.
The couple wanted to maintain a strong connection with the parent so as not to isolate him from their home whilst maintaining their own privacy and activities. It was also important that the studios could function independently for each artists different work type, yet become a single connected space if required.
The studios were designed to be split by an outdoor corridor providing visual connection between the apartment and the house as well as being a meeting place between the studios. The budget for the project was tight, so attention was paid to simplicity in materials and construction methods without sacrificing architectural interest.
